"An Introduction to the Minimal Model Program"

-Abstract

The problem of reaching a birational classification of (smooth) complex projective varieties is classical in algebraic geometry.

In dimension one, the problem comes out to be trivial and, in dimension 2, it was completely solved at the beginning of the XX century. We have to wait until the 1980's for an approach, due to S. Mori, to the 3-dimensional case, which is far more complicated and requires new tools. This is the beginning of the Minimal Model Program, which is nowadays one of the most active areas of algebraic geometry.

In this talk, after recalling some basic notions of algebraic geometry, I will introduce some of the tools of the Minimal Model Program, illustrating them through many examples.
